POWER-JAZZ COMMANDO TEAM TO TOUR NEW STUDIO ALBUM

Taupe, Newcastle’s resident punk/jazz/chaos maestros, release their second album Fill Up Your Lungs and Bellow on 24th February in advance of a UK tour (dates below).

The Tyneside Trio, now split between Newcastle, Manchester and Edinburgh and comprising Jamie Stockbridge on Alto Sax, Mike Parr-Burman on Guitar and Adam Stapleford on Drum Kit, enlisted the wisdom of experimental music legend and all-round top guy Chris Sharkey (TrioVD, Shiver, Acoustic Ladyland) to produce the record, a follow-up to their eponymous 2014 debut which was featured on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and led to a run of performances at jazz festivals and rock clubs the length and breadth of the country.

The album refines Taupe's metrically explorative constructions and avant-bop melodies, and juxtaposes this with increasingly brave interactive improvisations and sonic explorations. In so doing, Taupe cite influences from South Indian Carnactic music, the pounding polyrhythms of Meshuggah, the math-bop grooving of Steve Coleman’s M-Base movement and mischievous stompbox noise-wranglings.

Fill Up Your Lungs and Bellow is available to pre-order now on Bandcamp and will be released on CD and digital download on 24th February 2017.

A Clown Drools, the first track on the new album, is also available to stream now in the same place, and will be released as a video single in January 2017.

Print + web quality images are available to download below, and more information about the group is available on the group's general purpose epk. For a physical copy of the album, quotations, interviews, queries, or any other reason, please get in touch via the details at the bottom of this page.

'[Taupe] harness a telekinetic connection which allows them to flow between perfect sync and wild improvisation, just when you least expect it. Unreal.'

- Strange Behaviours.

‘Encompassing all that is great about the exploration of music, [...] Taupe take jazz, pull it apart, then put it back together without the instruction manual.’

‘There are moments of complete randomness, like a pigeon stuck in a post-box, then there are beautiful melodic interludes, maybe a quiet reflection, quickly followed by an angry tantrum.’

- NARC. Magazine.
